I HIGHLY adivise NOT TO GET THIS PRODUCT UNTIL THIS IS FIXED. It’s making be abandon what could be a GREAT product. Not just the F-18, all carrier aircraft are this way. but the control elements and ability to set joystick buttons and axis is TERRIBLE. Yes, in a properly flown approach at the correct attitude the hook touches down first. The graphics and flight characteristics are great. They have “some” input settings upon launch (before the game starts), but then others INSIDE the game that can and do conflict with those setup during launch! I love and hate this product. Obviously they have different development teams working on different products because the Extreme Landings product works well. Your task is to utilize your skills to land on the aircraft carrier. We have long wanted to develop a true pilot simulator, but this wasn’t possible until the advent of virtual reality. I’ve reinstalled, reset everything I can fined etc. With F/A 18 Carrier Landing, we’re able to bring the armchair pilot into the cockpit of a fighter jet.

For instance, using my thrustmaster slider for thrust also moves flaps. You can’t clear the controls, and some controls do multiple things at the same time. I don't know if a newer PC that would allow me to run graphics better then 1920x1080 would help w/ that or not but I am stuck w/ what I have for now.- Advanced Flight Simulator and Aircraft Carrier Landing System I use it as a flashing light that guides me to the boat from 10NM out and that is it. I never use the Ball to guide me to the deck because I can't see it until maybe. Once I have both ICLS lines on the HUD that is all I watch. Apparently it is a somewhat narrow beam ( I am guessing only maybe 10-15 degrees left and the same to the right) so you need to be within that cone before the line shows up on the HUD. The localizer (left-right) shows up later.

Mid way through that last turn I start to watch the ICLS lines. I am generally too far so that tells me I will be doing a somewhat lazy turn to get to the final approach. I watch TACAN mostly to see how close I get to the 1.2 - 1.4 NM I am supposed to be when abeam the boat. I do my turn to downwind and stop turning at 180 deg from the BRC (watching the normal heading indicator at the top of the HUD).

If I am planning on doing the correct pattern (which I am still not very good at) I do pay attention to the TACAN and the BRC. When I do a straight in approach from 10nM out I don't usually bother watching TACAN.

That can be done via UFC or the manual knob on the left console. It's different from a civillian ILS in many ways, but the most important and practical to you is that you do not have to tune a VHF radio frequency and select a course.

It should also be set to on and boxed in the HSI. ICLS should be set to the channel in which the ship is broadcasting (also configured and confirmed in the ME beforehand). FOr you ti be somewhere in the 1.2-1.3 nm distance abeam at the 180, your wingtip on the HSI should be just touching the course at that scale. You use that on the HSI to line up with behind the ship (initial), and also to gauge your distance on the downwind leg (set HSI to 10nm scale). The course should be the 180 reciprocal of the BRC (or the BRC itself, if you don't want to be picky). Please set your tacan according to the ship's tacan (which can be confirmed before loading the mission in the ME). ICLS is one instrument in the boat, the tacan station is an entirely different instrument, and both emit different waves with distinct purposes.
